That said, a #1 overall pick probably has some sweet trade value and since Patrick isn't considered to be a strong player relative to the #1 overall pick of most years, I'd trade down a couple times, maximize the asset and still pick a player with as decent a shot to be a star in the top ten.

Ahhhh, the old "multiple teams will be trading up for guys who supposedly aren't much better than the guy we want later" move

Works every time...

Hischier is described as quicker, but I bet Patrick's skating improves with time and he closes the speed gap on Hischier to some extent. Patrick was more or less robbed of a developmental year this year.

There are always teams that want a higher draft pick. Some teams can even be taken advantage of because they want/need to make a splash.

New Jersey is not really a rebuilding team - they could probably take advantage of the Sabres, who'd love to get #1 and have Evander Kane for sale.

Would they give you Kane and swap picks? Maybe they'd want more, but I can't see it taking that much more. It's just an idea anyways, but even if you get a 3rd rounder to drop to second, I'd do it.

Can you tell me when a top 3 pick has been traded before the draft? Or heck even when top 10 picks have been traded before the draft? Heck even as guess as to how often it happens?

Devils were supposed to pick 5th and now get to pick the(ir) best player in the draft. Even if it is just an "idea" I think it should at least make some reasonable sort of sense

Patrick is the next RNH and that's not how you want to spend a number 1. Small, fragile, complimentary player.

Just go with nico

6'3" is small?

I'm actually hoping that Patrick falls to us at 2 so I hope you're right.

hmmm. Patrick has 2 inches and 30 lbs on RNH at draft time. He's a bigger prospect than even Ryan Johansen coming out, who I think is the best comp

that last top 3 pick that I remember being traded was the yashin for #2 and chara

as for top 10:

- Schneider for #9 ( I think it was 9 )
- I might be mistaken but I think Jordan staal was traded at the draft for a top 10 pick
- I can't think of any others off the top of my head in the last 15 to 20 years.

Notice all involve a player. I guess maybe someone is dumb enough to assume Evander Kane is worth that

For picks? ref. BSH
2008: Maple Leafs trade pick #7, a future second-round pick, and pick #68 for pick #5
2008: Predators trade pick #9 and pick #40 for pick #7
2007: Sharks trade pick #13 and pick #44 for pick #9

The Islanders (who picked fourth in that draft) offered every one of their picks for the #2 pick in 2012, and amazingly Columbus said no. Who's dumber in that situation, Garth Snow or Jarmo?

Both those trades in '08 were the Islanders trading down. Hooray for Josh Bailey!

Man that was an unspectacular first round that year.

Yeah I remember that. I wasn't sure if that was confirmed or rumored. Shows how ridiculously valuable the top picks are to these guys (especially recently under current CBA)

there were 3-4 guys who are elite players, another couple who are pretty damn good, and then the rest was crap (relatively speaking)

karlsson
stamkos
doughty
pietrangelo
eberle
Carlson

the whole draft was actually pretty weak, even after the 1st round there are only a handful of impactful NHL players

josi, stepan, harmonic, Henrique, brodie, Atkinson....and that's about it for the whole damn draft
